A downloadable game

Eclipse Blade is a retro ninja action-platformer inspired by classic ninja games from the late-NES era.

An eclipse has opened the Eclipse Gate. From it, ancient evil soldiers pour into the human world. Darkness is spreading. Humanity is on the verge of destruction.

You, the chosen ninja, set out armed with your katana and ninja skills to defeat the evil army and destroy the source of darkness behind it all.

Features:

  • Challenging old-school action-platformer gameplay
  • Fully hand-crafted pixel art in a late-NES style
  • Different types of ninja skills — Blade and Ninjutsu — let you fight in different ways
  • Also includes optional hardcore and speedrun modes (not available in the Demo)

Latest Version: 0.21.6

  • Removed the startup delay on katana swings and skill attacks for a snappier, more responsive feel during fast-paced movement.
  • Fixed incorrect hitbox sizes on several enemies that could cause players to take damage without actually touching them.
  • Adjusted some item drops.

first of all, I love the graphics.

As for the gameplay, and comparing it to Ninja Gaiden, I see a big problem with your sword attack: there's a delay for the hitbox to come out, and makes the gameplay frustrating. This delay caused me to keep getting hit since my sword hitbox would not come out in time even though I pressed the button before colliding with enemies. Your other abilities seem to have the same delay, which I think really hurts the gameplay.

This reminded me of how your attacks works in classic Castlevania, but in those games you can clearly see the character winding up before attacking and they have a slower pace. Idk if this was the intend for Eclipse Blade, but since it looks so similar to Ninja Gaiden, I believe most people will find this delay in your attacks very counterintuitive, get hit a lot and feel it's unfair.

Whether to have attack startup delay or not has actually been a pretty important question throughout EB’s development, and I’ve been going back and forth on it myself.

For now I’ve been using the version with some startup delay, but this is definitely not final, and both versions are already set up in the code. I’ll keep testing the feel and watching the feedback.

Thanks a lot for the detailed feedback!

Update: As of version 0.21.6, the startup delay on katana swings and skill attacks has been removed.
